Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Practising Law LLC (“we”, “us”, “our”) collects, uses, shares and protects your personal information when you use the Junior Lawyer's Field Guide (the “Service”) at practisinglaw.com.au and its subdomains (the “Site”).

We are the controller of your personal information. We are a limited liability company registered in the Sharjah Media City Free Zone (Shams), Emirate of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, with our registered address at Shams Business Center, Sharjah Media City Free Zone, Al Messaned, Sharjah, UAE.

Because we sell internationally, this Policy is written to reflect the UAE Personal Data Protection Law and, where they apply to you, other laws such as the EU/UK GDPR and the Australian Privacy Act.

1. What information we collect

Information you give us

  • Account information — your name, email address, and account credentials, collected when you register or purchase (handled through our membership provider, Outseta).
  • Payment information — when you buy, your payment is processed by Stripe. We receive confirmation of payment and limited billing details (such as the last four digits of your card and country); we do not receive or store your full card number.
  • Content you submit— questions you send to the Q&A feature, feedback, and the content of support emails you send us.

Information we collect automatically

  • Usage and device data — pages viewed, actions taken, approximate location, IP address, browser and device type, and referring pages, collected through our analytics and hosting logs.
  • Search queries — the text you enter into the AI-powered search (see clause 3).

We do not intentionally collect special categories of data (such as health or biometric data), and ask that you do not submit them through the Service.

2. How we use your information

We use your information to:

  • provide the Service, create and secure your account, and control access to member content;
  • process your payment and provide refunds;
  • operate the AI-powered search and other features (see clause 3);
  • send you transactional and onboarding emails (for example your login details and the onboarding sequence after purchase);
  • send you our newsletter and other marketing emails where you have subscribed (you can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email, or by emailing us);
  • respond to your questions, feedback and support requests;
  • maintain the security and integrity of the Service and prevent fraud or misuse (for example, detecting shared or unauthorised accounts);
  • understand how the Service is used and improve it; and
  • comply with our legal obligations (including tax and accounting records).

Where the law requires a legal basis (for example under the GDPR), we rely on: performance of our contract with you (providing the Service); our legitimate interests (securing, understanding and improving the Service); your consent (for optional marketing, which you can withdraw at any time); and compliance with legal obligations.

3. AI-powered search

The Service includes an AI-powered search. When you use it, the text of your query is sent to our third-party AI provider (Anthropic) to generate a response. Please do not enter confidential client information, personal data about others, or privileged material into the search. Your queries are used to return results and to operate and improve the search feature; they are handled subject to the AI provider's terms.

4. How we share your information

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with:

  • Service providers (“processors”) who help us run the Service, under agreements that require them to protect your information and use it only on our instructions, including:
    • Outseta — membership, accounts, and transactional/onboarding email;
    • Stripe — payment processing;
    • Vercel — website hosting and privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics;
    • Anthropic — the AI-powered search (see clause 3);
    • Tally— the Q&A submission form;
    • Brevo — sending our newsletter and marketing emails, if you subscribe;
  • Professional advisers, authorities and others where necessary to comply with the law, enforce our Terms, or protect our rights, users or the public; and
  • A successor in connection with a sale, merger or reorganisation of our business.

5. International transfers

We are based in the UAE and our providers operate in various countries (including the United States and the EU). This means your information may be transferred to, and processed in, countries other than the one you live in, whose data-protection laws may differ from yours. Where required, we take steps to ensure an appropriate level of protection for such transfers (for example, relying on our providers' standard contractual clauses or equivalent safeguards).

6. How long we keep your information

We keep your personal information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the Service. After that, we keep it only as long as necessary for the purposes described in this Policy, including to comply with legal, tax and accounting obligations, resolve disputes and enforce our agreements. When it is no longer needed, we delete or anonymise it.

7. Cookies

We use only essential cookies — small files needed to keep you signed in, secure your session (including the session cookie that keeps you logged in to the member library), and remember basic preferences. We do not use advertising or third-party tracking cookies.

For usage statistics we use privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics (Vercel Web Analytics), which measures aggregate traffic and page performance without cookies and without identifying you individually. Because we do not set non-essential cookies, we do not show a cookie-consent banner. You can still control or block cookies through your browser settings, but blocking essential cookies may stop parts of the Service from working.

8. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • access the personal information we hold about you;
  • ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete information;
  • ask us to delete your information;
  • object to, or ask us to restrict, certain processing;
  • receive a copy of certain information in a portable format;
  • withdraw consent where we rely on it (without affecting prior processing); and
  • lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority (for example, the UAE Data Office, or your national regulator in the EU, UK or Australia).

To exercise any of these rights, email us at jason@practisinglaw.com.au. We will respond within the time required by the law that applies to you. We may need to verify your identity first.

9. Security

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your personal information against loss, misuse and unauthorised access, including access controls and encrypted connections. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Children

The Service is intended for adults (18+) and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.

11. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. If we make material changes we will take reasonable steps to notify you (for example by email or a notice on the Site). The “Last updated” date shows when it was last revised.
